The Band Dads Podcast
Band is more than music. It’s pressure, passion, leadership, chaos, life lessons, unforgettable moments… and a community unlike anything else.
The Band Dads Podcast pulls back the curtain on the world of marching band, concert band, music education, and the people who live it every day. Hosted by band dads — including a former band director bringing years of insider experience and perspective most parents never get access to — this podcast dives into the stories, challenges, victories, and culture that make band life so unique.
From rehearsals, competitions, road trips, fundraising, and late-nights in the band room to the decision-making, strategy, and behind-the-scenes realities of running a successful program, we explore the conversations happening both on and off the field. Leadership. Competition. Burnout. Growth. Success. Failure. Family. The emotional highs of performance and the hilarious realities nobody talks about enough.
Whether you’re a band kid, a proud parent, a music educator, or someone who simply loves hearing passionate people talk about the things that shape lives and build community, there’s something here for you.
New episodes feature honest discussions, interviews, deep dives into band culture, insider perspective, and plenty of humor along the way.
Because band isn’t just an activity. For many of us… it becomes part of who we are.

Band camp doesn't come with an instruction manual. So the Band Dads made a playbook.
For the Season 4 kickoff, Scott and Chris take a different approach to the band camp conversation. Instead of simply talking about what happens at camp, they dig into the strategies and philosophies behind it—and why getting those decisions right can have such a tremendous impact on the season ahead.
How should a band camp schedule be built? Should every program approach it the same way? How should those precious hours be used most effectively? What goes into the operational side of running a successful camp? And perhaps most importantly for parents: how do you best support your student through the process?
There are an incredible number of moving pieces that have to come together to make band camp work, and there is no single formula that is perfect for every program. But that doesn't mean there aren't important questions every program, director, student, and parent should be asking.
The Band Dads walk through those questions and help you think about band camp as a whole—from the schedule and instructional time to logistics, expectations, student preparation, parent support, and everything in between.
Because here's the bottom line: there is no other time in the marching band season when a program can accomplish what it can during band camp. The concentrated time, shared experience, intensity, and opportunity for growth are completely unique to marching band—and what happens during those days can lay the foundation for everything that follows.
So whether you're a first-year band parent wondering what you've gotten yourself into, a veteran parent looking for a new perspective, a student getting ready to tackle camp, or a director preparing to make the most of those precious days, The Band Camp Playbook is here to help you get there.
And now we want to hear from you.
What worked at your band camp? What absolutely didn't? What camp traditions, strategies, disasters, successes, or stories have stuck with you? What happened at your camp that you think the Band Dads—and the rest of our amazing band family—would enjoy hearing about?
